The Harlowton Area Chamber of Commerce and Agriculture has signed a buy-sell to purchase the former Chevron Gas station property at the corner of Central Ave and 2nd Street NW (US 12). We would like to thank Rick Smart, the owner, for giving us an opportunity to beautify this key intersection in the heart of Harlowton.
As of November 2013 the Chamber is initiating a Capital Campaign to raise $50,000 through tax deductible contributions for the first stage of this project which is to purchase ($40,000) and clean up ($10,000) the property. The Chamber feels strongly that the need to raise the funds initially to purchase and clean up the property is extremely important and needs to be accomplished as soon as possible so the site can be cleaned up by spring.
Planning and fundraising for the second stage will be ongoing as the Chamber develops a vision for the project. The second stage will consist of grants, donations, donated labor and material to finish the project which we hope to have done by late summer of 2014.
"This is a Community Project where we can all participate. No donation is too large or too small. Your contribution helps! Please consider any ‘in-kind” contributions of labor and talents as well."
We ask that donations be made out to City of Harlowton, (memo, Smart property) who will handle the funds and then transfer to the Chamber of Commerce for the project. All donations are tax-deductible.
Bill Jones, President

Community Support requested by John Love
A very worrying aspect on the research that John Love has been carrying out on the American State Theatre Restoration has been establishing the factual history of this once great theatre venue and trying to find photos of the theatre itself opened in 1920. He as only found two (2) photographs of the exterior taken before 1946! One taken in January, 1919 by the photographer, Robert Sorboe; one postcard copy of a photo dated circa: 1920. Of the interior, there has been nothing found!
This is despite a myriad of Harlowton stage productions and performances! Including annual school graduations, school plays and musicals; local musical and operetta productions, political speeches, funerals, boxing matches, agricultural lectures, political rallies, state conferences and meetings by the Harlowton Kiwanis Club, and many more, listed over the years. One revue at the American State Theatre had over 200 local people on-stage!
SURELY SOMEONE HAD A KODAK BOX BROWNIE, OR SOME OTHER KIND OF CAMERA THAT MIGHT HAVE TAKEN PHOTOGRAPHS OF FAMILY MEMBERS LIVE-ON-STAGE AT SOME SHOW?
To date he has garnered at least 1,000 important copies of old Harlowton papers located in the Musselshell Museum, with the very able assistance of curator, Robyn Lode and Reanna Dale. Despite these searches, of their valuable holdings of the early Harlowton Newspapers, and those also made kindly available by editor, Shelli Randles, held at The Times Clarion to me. Despite these newspapers forays, not a single artist’s drawing, or photograph of the theatre, inside or out, can be located! We were able to obtain copies of the Architects, Link and Hair, original drawings and their structural blueprints.
It is important for our restoration proposal that we do find something to assist us in this direction. There is an excellent painting of the front by Harlowton’s artist Tim Robbins, who has agreed to come up with a new work based his original concept, but bringing in the new elements of the new American State Theatre frontage proposed by John Love.
Please look through your photo albums and boxes of pictures to see if there might be something that can be copied for this project.
